Ban on Incandescent Lamps: Understand Here!

After 136 years of existence, the Brazil enacts a ban of incandescent bulbs. Although there are since 1802, only in 1879 Thomas Edison built the first marketable incandescent lamp.

Ban on Incandescent Lamps Understand Here!

The ban, in force since the 1st of July, goes for 60 W lamps, remaining on the market only 25 lamps W and 40 W, which can be sold until June 2016.

How do incandescent bulbs

Some materials emit light when they reach certain temperature when heated. This phenomenon is called incandescence. The material used in the domestic light bulbs is tungsten, and the heating is given by Joule Effect, which is the heating by the passage of electric current. This is the same effect that occurs in iron and electric shower.

The temperature of the filament of the lamp can reach 3,000° C! At that temperature, despite of the filament does not merge, could ignite event in contact with oxygen. To avoid that, inside of lamps there is an inert gas, which did not catch on fire. It also helps to reduce the wear of the filament.

Why the ban on incandescent light bulbs

Is consensus of all the electric shower is one of the major contributors to the increase in the electricity bill. So, if the incandescent light bulb has the same operating principle, is to be expected that she also has your contribution.

But an electric shower has 5,000 watts while the bulb 60 watts only prohibited. Why is that? The answer is in the performance. An incandescent light bulb uses only 10% of the energy it consumes to generate light, all the rest is converted into heat. In other words, it’s like you bought a flashlight and you deliver a heater. Doing another analogy, imagine you have a salary of 1,000 dollars, but your boss just pay you 100, because the rest would go to pay taxes — you’d be happy? That’s what happens when you use an incandescent.

Alternatives to incandescent lamp

One of the unique advantages of incandescent lamp is your price, which is lower than the other kinds, but, on the other hand, besides not being efficient, your life is the lowest of all. To make a comparison, a 60 W incandescent lamp cost around 1.50 R$ and has 1,000 hours average durability (2 months).Compact 15 W fluorescent, which have similar brightness, costs about $10 and lasts for about 6,000 hours (8 months). Already the equivalent in LED, 8 W, costs about $20 and 50,000 hours of use (5 years). The economy, to replace the incandescent light bulb by 75% and is fluorescent, LED by 85%. It is worth remembering that the time here is measured in continuous hours without erasing the lamp. If we do the math with the lamps lit only 8 hours a day we have:

  • Incandescent: 4 months;
  • Fluorescent: 2 years;
  • Led: 17 years!

We see that, despite the lamp LED be the most expensive, is that harder and spend less, which can reduce up to 90% per year to your electric bill.
